Prohibited Drugs for Food Producing Animals

The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine has the following drugs on the prohibited list for use in food producing animals which includes so-called extra-label use:


1. Chloramphenicol7. Furazolidone (except approved topical use)
2. Clenbuterol 8. Nitrofurazone (except approved topical use)
3. Diethylstilbestrol (DES)9. Sulfonamide drugs in lactating dairy cattle*
4. Dimetridazole 10. Fluoroquinolones
5. Ipronidazole11. Glycopeptides
6. Other Nitroimidazoles

*except approved use of sulfadimethoxine, sulfabromomethazine, and sulfaethoxpyridazine.

While many of these drugs have been on the prohibited list for some time, the addition of fluoroquinolones and glycopeptides is a recent amendment to the prohibited drugs. Fluoroquinolones are only approved for chickens, turkeys and small animal pets while the glycopeptides are only approved for human use.

In addition, the FDA will be giving special attention to testing for residues of these drugs in milk and meat.
